Huia's performance is a sonic cultural experience, featuring organic Māori percussion, sensual and strong vocals, electronic beats, and ancient harmonies. Her latest album ‘Kawakawa’ has been described as 'electro with spirit' as her sound fuses sounds of nature from Aotearoa NZ, flowing from ambient to DnB big floor subs.
As an artist, she sits between worlds, as does her music, which is the place where her Māori culture, rich ancestral lines, and evolving modern sound plays.
“I’m inspired by the inner workings of the mind, the heart, the manawa (spirit) and the way we connect back through our ancestors, and into the future through our children and the lives of people we connect with. Language can be medicine”.
Her music is breaking the silence… not her silence, but by the act of singing in te reo Māori (Māori language), she is breaking her ancestors' silence of a language through the violence of colonisation. More than ‘just a language’, singing in Māori is a mode of healing generations, ensuring stronger futures. As a māmā and a gentle leader, Huia’s music amplifies her values and her culture, and she brings this to the stage with an uplifting mana wahine experience.
Kawakawa, her latest album, took the #4 spot in the Aotearoa Music Charts and had 5 weeks in the official charts. Huia’s album had its live debut earlier in the year at Scotland’s Knockengorroch festival in Galloway.
Performance highlights for 2026/25 include Homegrown (wuth Rei), AUM festival, Osaka World Expo (Japan), Knockengorroch (Scotland), Festival of Lights (New Plymouth), Imaginative Film Festival, International Indigenous Music Summit (Toronto, Canada) and SXSW Sydney, Australia. She will also be on the WOMAD (NZ) line up for 2027!
