The Long Song Gathering 2026

This residency is the 2026 iteration of our multi-year global exchange pathway, hosted by HūHā Music, Matariki Cultural Foundation, Pacific Underground and Kog Studio, with more partners to get on the waka as it evolves. Anchored in Kaupapa Waka (Wayfinding), the project uses the principles of navigation and migration as a methodology for musical composition and cultural connection.

The Long Song Gathering centres around 3 Pou / Pillars for our ‘Music People of Culture’.  - MUSIC/WAIATA - - NEW COLLABORATIVE WORKS/TUIA -  - CULTURE EXCHANGE/AKO -

- MUSIC/WAIATA -

Scheduled for September 4th to September 14th, 2026 (up to 10 days), the residency strategically brings together 10-15 international artists and 10-15 Māori/Pacific artists. The residency involves an immersive creative journey from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) to Te Aurere (Northland), where the Star Compass (Kāpehu Whetū) is used to guide composition. We have been connected with all participants through travel, music conferences, showcases and panels.

- NEW COLLABORATIVE WORKS/TUIA -

New Compositions in Language: Production of new collaborative works, primarily composed and performed in the participants' respective Indigenous languages. Utilising both the recording setups in Te Tai Tokerau and post production at Kog Studio, Tāmaki Makaurau.

POU 3

- CULTURE EXCHANGE/AKO -

This residency aims to strengthen relationships, provide new works and develop cultural understanding through music between Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Tai Tokerau and our global music manuhiri (guests). The collaborations and participant selection will focus on existing relationships and the future trade paths we want to initiate between our Māori and Pacific artists/producers and our global guests.

WHĀ (4), is a proven residency model, building on established global networks and successful cultural exchanges. This experience ensures the project is a continuation of our combined past global mahi and activated trade paths. This is the 4th residency we have activated but is the first global residency in Aotearoa for The Long Song, He Waiata Roa.
