AJA

Untitled-1-01.jpeg

Silver Scroll winning singer-songwriter AJA (Ngāti Raukawa, Te Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Porou) is carving out an intricate and memorable spot across the Kiwi music scene.

With a fusion of jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and reggae, AJA lures you in with her hypnotic lyrics, and self-described ‘indigenous soul sound’. Her stirring melodies are then woven into a backdrop of Te Reo Māori and English waiata, in a firm nod to her iwi and heritage.

A grounded and powerful musician, AJA draws inspiration from love, whānau, whakapapa and Te Reo Māori. Her voice and musical arrangements transport listeners through a vast musical landscape, while her smooth, heartfelt lyrics touch on moments of growth, and the opportunities that stem from adversity. Now as she looks to the future, she hopes to weave elements of social issues into her powerful words.

With four single releases so far (‘Te Reo ki Whakarongotai’, ‘Kawai’, ‘Feel it’ and ‘Non-Handler’) and a duo track ‘Te Iho’ alongside Byllie-Jean and Chris Wethey - AJA is making waves already, and she’s just getting started.

In 2022 she was presented with the esteemed APRA Maioha Silver Scroll Award for her waiata ‘Te Iho’. She headlined Newtown Festival, performed at Cuba Dupa, the Matariki Awards and opened Wellington’s Kia Mau Festival with her self produced show ‘Manawa Pao’.
